Porsche 917 in the Rain

Work in Progress: Gulf-Porsche #20 - Detail study.
I was always a McQueen fan - that man was just too damn cool. Surprisingly, it took me forever to finally watch Le Mans - just three years ago. I've probably watched it a half-dozen times since. Nothing like the sounds of those engines at full song. This illustration is born from luck. I've just about got the layout figured out, and I'll be trying a few tests to determine level of detail. But there is more to this than just another car portrait...

Bird's the Word

STUDY: Bird's the Word : Alien.
Hoping to have some fun with this one. I was in between projects at the shop today, and started day dreaming about a beautiful T-Bird I saw at the Fantasy of Flight Show this year - and the 'Futuristic' styling of cars from the 60's. Got me wondering, "What was the design inspiration behind some of those fantastic cars?" Who says the inspiration had to come from Detroit?

I'll update as progress warrants. "Follow" me if you want to be the first to know.

1979 Mustang Pace Car - at the Brickyard

This is one of the most popular early, third-generation Mustangs around. They made quite a few of them - but it's pretty rare to see one in clean condition these days.

HSR at PBIR 2012

What a fun day. I live near a lot of great racetracks, and this time of year they are busy with events that are fun to go watch. The Historic Racing Series came to town, and I had a full charge on the camera.

Rolex 24 at Daytona : 2012

UPDATE 1: I've always been a fan of race art from the 60's and 70's - particularly the promotional art for the endurance races. That appreciation is influencing this illustration. Typically, that style was achieved with a combination of illustration, graphic design and photography. Sure, I take all my own reference photos - but in this design I'm limiting myself to graphics and illustration.
If you're a racing fan, and haven't attended the Rolex 24 at Daytona - drop everything and make reservations right now for 2013. Seriously. In this post I'll chronicle the amazing time I had at the race - and walk you through each step of a poster to celebrate a blue-oval-sweep of the race.  ;)

Rising from the east: The Datsun 510

UPDATE 2: Now that I've layered in the base color and form of the 510, I'm evaluating how much weight the 'Rising Sun' flag should have. I'll be playing a lot with the saturation level of the red in the flag to complement the car.
This little sedan has been tearing through the field for over 40 years - and it's still sexy as ever.
